Mamas Latinas: Pregnancy & Postpartum Support & Well-Being
Becoming a mom is the often the hardest thing many women will have to go through, physically and mentally. Many aren’t prepared or not expecting for the level of intensity – I know I was surprised. What’s more, most people don’t realize that the “fourth trimester” – a still risky part of postpartum healing — lasts around one year after birth.
So as a Latina you have even more to worry about when pregnant, with higher than average maternal mortality and injury rates and even higher risk of COVID: The CDC found last year that Hispanic or Latina mothers make up nearly half of the coronavirus cases among pregnant women. What’s more, they have a higher risk of postpartum anxiety or other mood disorders.
We wanted to find Latinas doing incredible things for moms – here’s what we found:
Latinx Parenting
Less to do with pregnancy and more to do with parenting topics, Leslie Priscila is a trained childhood specialist who runs trauma-focused bilingual courses around la Madre Wound, trauma and “Reparanting”. Latinx Parenting is “a bilingual organization rooted in children’s rights, social and racial justice and antiracism, the individual and collective practice of nonviolence and reparenting, intergenerational and ancestral healing, cultural sustenance, and the active decolonization of oppressive practices in our families.”
Wellness Para Mama
Susana Marquez’ safe space para mamas specializes in women’s maternal mental and emotional health. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Psy.D and a Maternal Mental Health Clinician who offers therapy, support groups, workshops and classes for women during pregnancy, postpartum, parenthood and more. She helps “mother’s take control of their mental and emotional well being through their darkest and most challenging moments”.
