  The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is finally upon us and Christina and I found our faves that we will definitely buy on July 18th, when everything goes live. Sneakers that you’ll love wearing to the school pick up line this fall  and workout sets as soft as butter you can take to pilates or the gym. Also: all of the accessories. And the prices are unreal. The sale works backwards from every other sale on the calendar. Most sales are a store clearing out what didn’t sell. This one marks down brand-new fall arrivals before the season starts, then puts the prices back up in August. That’s the reason it’s worth your attention — and the reason the good things disappear during early access while everyone else waits politely for the public opening. You’ll see plenty of coverage this week telling you to buy a $600 hair tool and a designer coat. That’s not this post. Everything I picked is something you’d actually wear on an ordinary Tuesday — and nothing is over $105. Early access is open to all Nordstrom cardmembers; your card tier just sets your day. If you shop Nordstrom regularly and were ever going to get the card, this is the one week of the year it clearly pays for itself. If you’re not opening a store card (reasonable), build your wish list from the preview now and check out the morning of the 18th. Nordstrom restocks throughout the sale, and the app notifies you when a wish-listed item comes back.

Sneakers you’ll wear into the ground

The sneaker section is quietly the best value in the sale. The 327 Sneaker ($104.99) is the one splurge on this list and the one I’d buy first — it sells out in the good colorways every year. The Era Sneaker ($69.99) and the Take Time Platform Sneaker ($64.99) cover the everyday rotation, and the Hila Water Resistant Slide ($54.99) is the house-to-garden-to-market shoe of the whole edit.

The wide-leg pants situation

If you’ve been meaning to retire the skinny jeans, this is the moment to do it at a discount. The Zen High Waist Wide Leg Pants ($54.99) and Easy Peasy Wide Leg Drawstring Pants ($64.99) are the polished versions; the Restore Soft Straight Leg Pull-On Pants ($49.99) split the difference between real pants and not. In denim, the Sam High Waist Wide Leg Jeans ($58.99) and the Risk Taker Raw Hem Straight Leg Jeans ($49.99) are both under $60 — the price point where you can buy fall jeans in July without negotiating with yourself. Beauty sets where the math actually works

I’m skeptical of “value sets” as a rule, but these three are real: the Showered in Almond Gift Set ($62.00, a $95 value), the Exfoliate & Glow Body Trio ($70.00, a $116 value), and the Double Shine N°7 Bonding Oil Duo ($62.00, an $88 value). If you already repurchase any of these, this is the annual stock-up.

The finishing touches

The Heart Stud Earrings ($26.99), a reversible belt ($44.99) — two belts’ worth of use for one price — and the Feathers Plunge T-Shirt Bra ($43.20), because the sale’s underpinnings section is the least glamorous and most worth it.

What I’d skip

Anything you’re only considering because it’s discounted. The sale generates a particular fever — carts full of trend pieces that get returned in August. The trendy things will be marked down again by November; the basics above won’t.
