I became a U.S. citizen last year, and if I’m being honest, I did not expect it to feel the way it did. I almost cried at the ceremony and had the best, giddiest time after when my hubs took me to dinner to celebrate. I’ve been genuinely, almost embarrassingly excited about every “first” since — my first jury summons, my first time filling out a census form, and especially my first time registering to vote. There’s something about doing these things for the first time as an adult, on purpose, that makes you appreciate them in a way you might not if you’d just grown up with them.
So if you’re newly eligible — whether you just became a citizen, just turned 18, or just moved to California — this one’s for you. Here’s exactly how to register, what you need, and the deadline you can’t miss.
Who Can Register to Vote in California
To register, you need to be:
- A U.S. citizen
- A California resident
- 18 years old by Election Day (you can pre-register starting at 16)
- Not currently serving a state or federal prison term for a felony conviction
How to Register Online
This is the easiest option, and it takes about five minutes.
- Go to registertovote.ca.gov
- Have ready: your California driver’s license or state ID number, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and your date of birth
- Fill out the short form and submit
That’s it. You’ll get a confirmation, and you can check your status anytime at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov.
Don’t Have a California ID?
You can still register — you’ll just fill out a paper form instead of the online one. You can get one at your local county elections office, DMV, library, or post office, or request one be mailed to you through the Secretary of State’s site.
The Deadline
For the November 3, 2026, general election, the deadline to register is Monday, October 19, 2026. In California, registration always closes 15 days before Election Day, so mark that date now.
Missed the Deadline? You’re Still Not Out of Luck
California has Same Day Voter Registration (technically called Conditional Voter Registration). If you miss the October 19 cutoff, you can still register and vote — you just have to do it in person, at your county elections office or any in-person voting location, any time up through Election Day itself.
One More Thing
If you already registered for a past election, you don’t need to re-register every year — but you do need to update your registration if you’ve moved, changed your name, or want to change your party preference. When in doubt, check your status at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov before assuming you’re covered.
