What is happening: the CDC and FDA are investigating a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations, and the CDC is telling people not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. More than 1,644 people have gotten sick and 94 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Where Taylor Farms comes in: The FDA’s traceback identified a single lettuce supplier from Mexico used by those Taco Bell locations. Federal alerts haven’t named the company, but investigators ALLEGEDLY identified Taylor Farms as the supplier, according to two people familiar with the investigation, as reported by the Washington Post. The FDA is working with the supplier to determine whether contaminated lettuce reached other restaurants or stores.

Are the salad kits at the grocery store affected? As of now, no grocery products — including Taylor Farms salad kits — are part of any warning. The current advisory covers only shredded iceberg lettuce at Taco Bell in the five states above. We’ll update this post immediately if that changes.

What Taco Bell is doing: Voluntarily pulling potentially affected lettuce in select states and removing that supplier’s lettuce from its national supply chain indefinitely.
