A Peruvian-Dutch-German co-production set deep in the Amazon, following a girl protecting her home from encroaching mining operations. Less polished than the Disney and Pixar entries, more specific in a way that’s worth sitting with — this is the pick for a family that wants something beyond the big two.
Ferdinand
Not Latin American — this one’s set in Spain — but it earns its spot as one of the few widely available animated films built around Spanish culture rather than dropped into it. A bull who’d rather smell flowers than fight in the ring, voiced in a Spanish dub that suits the story’s setting better than the English original does.
One to watch for
A sequel film to Maya and the Three is in development at Netflix Animation, with Jorge Gutiérrez back in the director’s chair and most of the original voice cast returning. No release date yet — we’ll update this once there is one.
