Game night is a non-negotiable around here. It doesn’t matter if it’s a random Tuesday or a big family trip — if there’s a table (or a cabin floor) and a deck of cards, we’re playing. Some of our best family memories have come out of a game that ran way longer than it was supposed to. Case in point: last summer in Tahoe, we sat down for “one quick round” of [Uno] and didn’t get up for an hour and a half. Nobody wanted to be the one to end it.
That’s really what this guide to the best family games is about. Not just games that pass the time, but the ones that turn into an actual event — the ones where everyone’s still laughing about a move twenty minutes after the game is over. Below is our full family game night lineup, shoppable through my LTK, organized by card games, classic board games, and the louder, more active picks.
Table of Contents
Card Games We Never Get Tired Of
Uno is the one that started it all for us, and it’s the game I’d point to first if someone asked what to buy. It travels well, it takes two minutes to explain, and somehow every single round ends in someone dramatically slapping down a Draw Four. Our Tahoe trip Uno session is basically family legend at this point — an hour and a half of Draw Twos, reversed turns, and a lot of trash talk for a game that costs less than a movie ticket.
Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza might be the funniest ten minutes you’ll spend as a family. Everyone chants the title while flipping cards, and the second a word matches the card, it’s a mad scramble to slap the pile. Simple enough for younger kids to jump in and chaotic enough that the adults get just as competitive. This one actually went viral in my daughter’s second grade class — it’s so funny that the kids started playing it daily, and she ended up bringing it home and begging me to buy it. It’s been a staple in our house ever since, and now heading into third grade, she still loves it just as much.
Spot It! is probably the fastest game to teach on this whole list. Two cards, one matching symbol, whoever spots it first wins the round. It travels everywhere with us and works for a wide range of ages at once.
Rat-a-Tat-Cat is a sneaky-good pick for kids who are just starting to grasp strategy. The goal is simple — keep your score low — but the peeking, swapping, and bluffing make it genuinely fun for adults too. It’s also just hilarious to play — this one gets some of the biggest laughs at our table.
A card holder for little hands is the accessory nobody thinks to buy until they’ve watched a five-year-old try to fan out ten cards on their own. This one’s a total game-night game-changer if you’ve got younger kids in the mix.
Classic Board Games for a Sit-Down Night
Monopoly is the marathon night game — the one you plan around, not squeeze in before bed. It’s slower than everything else on this list, but there’s nothing quite like the moment someone lands on your fully-loaded hotel property. Worth every long minute. This is actually my husband’s favorite game to play with our daughter, and honestly, it’s become such a special time for the two of them.
The Game of Life is the one that always sparks a debate about careers, kids, and who’s actually winning at “life.” A solid pick when you want a longer game with a little bit of everything.
Sorry! is proof that a simple “get your pawns home first” concept can still cause real drama. Sending someone back to start never stops being funny to the person who did it. This one’s really fun and easy to play, and honestly, it’s my personal favorite on this whole list.
Guess Who? Plus is a classic for a reason — kids love the detective work of narrowing down the mystery character with yes-or-no questions. This version includes both people and pet cards, so it stays fresh even after a dozen rounds.
Operation is the game that makes kids laugh every single time that buzzer goes off. Steady hands, a little bit of nerve, and Cavity Sam’s funny ailments make it a game night regular for a reason. It can get a little annoying, sure, but that buzzer catching you off guard is somehow always so funny.
Candy Land is the gateway board game for the littlest players — bright colors, no reading required, and a storyline that’s just enough to keep a preschooler invested to the finish line. The name alone gets the kids so excited — I mean, who doesn’t love candy.
Hi Ho! Cherry-O is a sweet, simple counting game that’s a great first “real” board game for preschool-aged kids. Short rounds mean nobody loses patience before it’s over.
Chutes and Ladders delivers the highs and lows every kid needs to learn to handle gracefully — one minute you’re climbing a ladder to the top, the next you’re sliding right back down. Simple rules, big reactions.
Trouble is the Pop-O-Matic classic that’s satisfying for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual gameplay — there’s something about popping that bubble that never stops being fun.
Games for Little Ones and Active Play
Hungry Hungry Hippos is peak little-kid energy — loud, fast, and a guaranteed giggle every time the marbles start flying. It doesn’t require much strategy, which makes it perfect for the youngest players at the table.
Perfection Plus turns “beat the clock” into a full-family showdown, especially with its 2-player duel mode. Great for the kid who thrives on a little friendly pressure.
Jenga is the game that gets everyone leaning in and holding their breath at the same time. It’s simple, it’s tense, and the collapse always gets a huge reaction — usually from whoever’s turn it wasn’t.
Balance stacking blocks are our low-key Jenga alternative for a smaller table or a younger crowd — same nerve-wracking stacking, just a different twist each round.
Connect 4 is a quick two-player classic that’s perfect for a fast round between other games. It looks simple, but there’s real strategy in it once kids start thinking a few moves ahead.
Twister is the one that gets everybody up off the couch and tangled together in the best way. Guaranteed laughs, guaranteed at least one person falling over.
Don’t Break the Ice is a preschool favorite that’s oddly satisfying for adults too — gently tap out ice blocks without sending anyone’s little polar bear plunging through.
Yeti in My Spaghetti is a giggly little balancing game where kids fish yeti-shaped noodles out of a pot without letting the yeti fall in. Quick to play, easy to teach, and a hit with the preschool-to-early-elementary crowd.
Bluey Scavenger Hunt is a cooperative pick for the littlest fans in the house — everyone works together instead of competing, which makes it a nice change of pace on a night when nobody wants to lose.
