AORA: The Plastic-Free, Mexican Ingredient Beauty Collection Now at Sephora

We love our beauty industry, since we were once beauty founders of Vamigas, a skincare brand that was once at Target, Whole Foods, and more. We had a wonderful time running the brand, but one of the benefits was learning all about the ins and outs of the beauty industry. A Mexico City-born makeup brand just did something no brand has done at Sephora before: launched with zero plastic packaging, across the board, on day one – not just one product, but ALL.

AORA México — founded in 2022 by Nour Tayara and Rodrigo Peñafiel — built its entire line around ingredients pulled straight from Mexican botanical tradition: five native chiles, cactus flower, and tepezcohuite, a bark long used in Mexican folk medicine for skin healing. Every product ships in tin, aluminum, or wood. No plastic components, no compromise on the formulas.

I’ve been testing the line since it landed on Sephora.com, and a few pieces earned a permanent spot in my routine.

INICIA Antipollution Illuminating Primer with Squalane & Tepezcohuite — $35

This is the one to start with. It’s built around tepezcohuite, the same bark ingredient traditionally used in Mexico to soothe and support healing skin, paired here with squalane for a primer that wears up to 12 hours and leaves a genuine glow underneath makeup rather than a greasy sheen. Mexico City’s air quality is no joke, and the brand designed this specifically to sit as a barrier against pollution while it does the illuminating work.
