Why Self-Care is Important for Latina Single Moms in Particular

Latina parents magazine cover

It’s tough to be a mom, it’s tough to be a mom of color in this country (or an immigrant) and it is extremely hard to be a mom of color during the pandemic. But single Latina moms are particularly underwater right now. With nearly 25% of Latinx kids in the U.S. living in a single parent household, there are a lot of moms who are needing mental health support – and even small gestures of self-care like Latina skincare or makeup goodies.

In their first ever study of Latina single moms, where they surveyed 400 single Latinas, Latina Parents magazine found that single moms’s top concerns were safety (with 43% of surveyed moms stating this), and mental health (39%). They also felt most challenged by balancing work and home life (39%) and lack of self-care or alone time (34%).

How do single Latina moms cope?

46% stated they try to balance their lives by spending time with family, 38% through exercise, and 34% on spending time with friends, and 33% on prayer or spirituality. These mamas also said they wanted to go on a family vacation and explore their interests more, as a way to cope.

Even through all of the challenges and this difficult year, Latina single moms are grounded in their families; 41% of them said that the love and bond with their kids is the most rewarding part of being a single mom, followed by the empowerment and strength from doing it all on their own (20%).
